The 5th Annual Deutschtown Music Festival will take place on Pittsburgh’s NorthSide on Friday and Saturday, July 14th and 15th. The free, two-day festival has become one the largest local music events of the year. Featuring over 200 bands, 7 outdoor stages and 20 over indoor venues, the festival has a little of something for everybody. Friday night features music in existing clubs and venues while Saturday is a full-day event. On Saturday, two main stages are featured during the day, one in Allegheny Commons Park and the other on a closed off block of Foreland Ave. A beer garden will exist in a closed-off portion of the city-owned parking lot next to the main stage. Family-friendly programming is featured during the daytime, with over 20 food trucks, children’s activities, an artists’ market, and other activities to supplement the music. Throughout the day and night, two free shuttles with multiple stops in the NorthSide and NorthShore will be available for the up to 20,000 people that are expected to attend. Multiple bars and clubs will participate throughout the night, allowing one to visit many different venues within a short walking distance.

Featured bands at City of Asylum:

6pm – Ishtar Vintage Band
8pm – The Turbosonics

Ishtar Vintage Band is Pittsburgh’s BellyRock Band. Ishtar is comprised of Melissa Murphey on clarinet, Jeff Chmielarski on electric bass, and Bryan Bowman on darbuka. Playing their own unique interpretation of Vintage Middle Eastern and Mediterranean folk melodies, Ishtar performs songs that were popular in the bellydancing nightclub scene during the mid-20th century. This exceptional fusion of traditional songs with surf rock elements has become: BellyRock.

In 2008, Ishtar was voted as Pittsburgh’s Best Underground Band by the readers of the City Paper!

Meet The Turbosonics: A premium blend of authentic surf beats, layered with modern fuzz tones, topped with artisanal pacific-coast melodies.

“The Professor” Keith Caldwell on Bass
“The Freight Train of Pain” Timmy Klatte on Drums
“Modena Maestro” Jason Truckenbrod on Lead Guitar

The Turbosonics is a three-piece, instrumental, surf-rock band based in Pittsburgh, PA. The band has release two full-length CDs and perform regularly around the western Pennsylvania area.  The live show is loud, powerful and filled with upbeat, surf rock energy. Their repertoire includes original compositions as well as traditional surf music by the likes of Dick Dale, Link Wray, The Surfaris, and The Ventures.
