Join us for a screening of Saxophone Colossus presented by Sembène – The Film & Art Festival.

Tenor saxophone master Sonny Rollins has long been hailed as one of the most important artists in jazz history, and still, today, he is viewed as the greatest living jazz improviser.  Robert Mugge’s SAXOPHONE COLOSSUS is a feature-length portrait of Rollins, and the film is named after one of his most celebrated albums.

The project began in May of 1986 and follows the artist and his wife Lucille Rollins around the globe.  A film’s soundtrack album, “G-Man,” was named best album of the year in 1987 by Village Voice music critic Robert Christgau.

Allen Young [Variety] wrote that SAXOPHONE COLOSSUS was “a documentary of a supreme jazz artist and man of artistic integrity” and the newly remastered version includes updated commentary and bonus features.
