Freedom to Create Virtual Keynote ft. Salman Rushdie and Russell Banks

Our annual public forum on freedom of expression features renowned authors and founders of the Cities of Asylum movement Salman Rushdie and Russell Banks.
The virtual presentation starts with a conversation between Rushdie and Banks about the Cities of Asylum movement and their experiences promoting free expression and combatting censorship for writers and artists around the world. This will be followed by Rushdie reading from his most recent novel, Quichotte. The evening will wrap up with the world premiere of a new composition written by saxophonist Oliver Lake to a text from Rushdie’s Quichotte in honor of the occasion and performed by the Flux string quartet.

"Actors Talk August" presented by August Wilson House

August Wilson House celebrates America’s greatest playwright with a new web series of insider interviews called “Actors Talk August,” substantial interviews streaming on the first and third Monday of each month.

This program features leading August Wilson actors, both national and regional, interviewed by Chris Rawson, veteran Pittsburgh Post-Gazette theater critic, who chronicled Wilson’s career and came to know him well. The aim is to capture the memories and thoughts of those who know Wilson’s great American epic best, from the inside, and helped to bring it to life on the stage.

Founded in May of 2016, Free Association Reading Series is for established and emerging Pittsburgh writers of prose, poetry, and non-fiction. A reading and conversations with two critically acclaimed poets Jill Bialosky and Toi Derricotte. Jill Bialosky will read from her new work Asylum: A personal, historical, natural inquiry in 103 Lyric Sections. This book-length sequence is a seeker’s story, revealing personal and historical traumas and how we search for understanding and meaning in their wake.
