Afro Yaqui Music CollectiveSunday, October 22, 2017 @ 6 p.m.
Join us for an evening of world-music inspired jazz, funk and soul with The Afro Yaqui Music Collective (featuring special guest poet Magdalena Gomez) presented by HarmoniZing.
The Afro Yaqui Music Collective (AYMC) is a 9-piece outfit which descends from the ensembles of Guggenhiem award winner Fred Ho, whose work was influenced by West African, global Indigenous and East Asian musics. The AYMC is co-led by Gizelxanath Rodreiguez, a Mexican operatic vocalist of Yaqui indigenous descent who is an internationally performing soprano and activist, also a winner of the 2014 ACE Award as a Soprano. The band is also led by her partner Ben Barson, Fred Ho’s Baritone protege who “he felt has the heft and sound to represent [Ho’s] assertive approach (The New York Times),” the band includes virtuosos such as Min-Xiao Fin (whom The New York Times has called “a pipa player like no other,”) Aaron Johnson (Trombonist and alumni of Aretha Franklin’s groups) and hip hop artists such as Bronx-born Freedom Singer spiritchild.
