Please join us for an evening of jazz featuring two of Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts School’s top ensembles: The CAPA Jazz Orchestra and CAPA Jazz Ensemble!

CAPA’s ensembles are made up of Pittsburgh’s most promising young talent. CAPA is dedicated to cultivating its student musicians through performance opportunities while simultaneously increasing the community’s awareness of jazz.


CAPA Jazz Orchestra: Director, Paul Thompson
Under the direction of Mr. Paul Thompson, this unique group hosts a range of instruments from strings to percussion including horns and electric instruments. Mr. Thompson personally arranges each piece specific to the group. The ensemble’s pieces cross genres and includes compositions from Chick Corea, Snarky Puppy, and others.

Paul Thompson been involved with programs at LaRoche College, Slippery Rock University, Kiski Area High School, and others as well as the annual Mellon Jazz Student Spectacular (’97, ’00). Paul Thomson is enjoying his position as Bass Instructor and Jazz Band director at CAPA High School. Currently, Paul Thompson is freelancing and teaching privately in the Pittsburgh area, and playing with various groups including OPEK and SALSAMBA, as well as his own group, the PAUL THOMPSON PROJECT. 


CAPA Jazz Ensemble: Director, Rick Matt
Under the direction of Mr. Rick Matt, this ensemble is a more traditional big band-style jazz band. Their repertoire features diverse jazz standards from artist’s such as Stan Kenton, Freddie Hubbard, Charlie Parker and many more. This group has come into their own with tight ensemble playing and collective improvisation.

Rick Matt is a top freelance saxophonist/woodwind specialist who resides in the Pittsburgh area. In addition to leading his own band and projects, he can be found performing as a sideman with a variety of groups and ensembles throughout the region including the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra, Pittsburgh Musical Theater and The Steel Town Horns. In addition to a busy performance schedule Rick is on staff as the Woodwind Specialist and Jazz Ensemble Director at Pittsburgh School for Performing Art’s (CAPA).
