Celebrate 60 years of bossa nova with Brazilian native and vocalist Kenia and special guest Wesley Amorim, renowned guitarist, composer, and arranger from São Paulo, Brazil. Fresh off the release of his 2019 album, “Simas & Amorim duo – Deuce,” Wesley joins Kenia, Tony Grey on bass and James Johnson on drums. This program will feature pieces by Brazilian legends like Antônio Carlos Jobim, João Gilberto, Marcos Valle, Carlos Lyra and more.

Bossa nova was the seductive sound of Brazilian music in the 1960s, a sophisticated art form that came from a specific point in the nation’s history. So much more than just a combination of jazz and samba, bossa nova’s syncopated rhythms and lyrical complexity quickly traveled to the U.S. and around the world, influencing musicians for decades to come. Singer Caetano Veloso described bossa nova as,”a sacred music for many Brazilians. It’s political, nationalistic and poetic. It’s a form of high modernist art that somehow became one of the most popular musics on earth.”

Kenia AshbyBrazilian songstress Kenia is renowned for her ability to translate the complex rhythms of her homeland into jazzy creations that embody the best of the Brazilian sound–deep and sultry, richly diverse, unexpectedly explosive.

Kenia will take you on a musical tour from big named standards (think Gershwin, Lennon and McCartney), to works by contemporary composers (Romero Lubambo, Luiz Simas), and finally to song written for Kenia by Antonio Adolfo and Ivan Lins. The music ranges from nimble vocalese to jazz-edged forró, a style from Brazil’s Northeast and includes many high-energy tributes to influential Brazilian jazz musicians.

Wesley Amorim is a guitarist, composer, and arranger from São Paulo, Brazil, started his musical journey at the age of 11years old. Graduated in music from the São Caetano do Sul Arts Foundation (FASCS). At 17, he began playing and recording professionally using a wide range of music genres, from Brazilian to jazz, rock, pop, and gospel. He has performed in Broadway musicals, including Jesus Christ Super Star and The Lion King, and with countless artists. He has performed at Carnegie Hall, Birdland, Blue Note, Joe’s Pub, The Metropolitan room, the Dimenna center, Club bonafide, and many others.
