Mark Bingham: Lost Hoagy Carmichael
Thursday, August 16, 2018 @ 8 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.Mark Bingham performs “Lost Hoagy Carmichael,” a curated set of little-known and previously unrecorded songs by the famed composer of American standards such as “Stardust,” “The Nearness of You,” and “Georgia on My Mind.”
Working from the vast collection in the Hoagy Carmichael Collection at the University of Indiana’s Archive of Traditional Music, Bingham has excavated unaccompanied lyrics, handwritten musical sketches from Carmichael’s heyday, and fully-fleshed, stylistically adventurous compositions from the twilight of Carmichael’s career. Bingham—born fifty years after Carmichael, in the same Indiana hospital—brings a lifetime of performing, composing, and producing experience to these “lost” pieces. With a learned, yet inspired sensibility, Bingham’s performance at once enlivens and deepens the oeuvre of one of the great figures in American music of the twentieth-century.
