Off Minor Jazz: Civil Liberties Ensemble
Sunday, February 17, 2019 @ 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.Join us for an evening of jazz with The Civil Liberties Ensemble, as part of the Off Minor Jazz Series.
The Civil Liberties Ensemble is dedicated to performing jazz music that was written to aid the continuing struggle for equality in America.
When many people think of “music of the Civil Rights Era” or “protest music”, they rarely think of jazz. Jazz was the original protest music and it played (and continues to play) an important role is the movement. The Civil Liberties Ensemble will perform compositions written between the 1940s and the present day–featuring the music of Jackie McLean, Max Roach, Rahn Burton, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, McCoy Tyner, Cannonball Adderely, Art Blakey and more–that reflect the continued struggle for equal rights in America.
The Off Minor Jazz Series highlights the music of legendary jazz composers and players. The series has been curated by drummer Thomas Wendt, who puts together the right musicians for each concert.
