All Pittsburghers are Poets

Poet Laureate Program for Allegheny County

City of Asylum is awarding Poets Laureate in four categories. This program is part of our new project, All Pittsburghers are Poets, that highlights the significance of poetry and advances our mission to defend, celebrate, and build on creative freedom of expression.

The Laureates will be honored at ceremonies in April in celebration of National Poetry Month on April 18 and April 29 at Alphabet City. For more information about the titles, click on the links below.

U.S. Poet Laureates Natasha Tretheway, Tracy K. Smith, and Joy Harjo have read at City of Asylum.

Poem of the Week

Throughout April in celebration of National Poetry Month, Allegheny County residents of all ages will be invited to submit one poem for All Pittsburghers are Poets: Poem of the Week. This series will appear online in Sampsonia Way Magazine beginning in May 2020. Poems will be curated by the editorial committee of Sampsonia Way and finalists for Emerging Poet Laureate of Allegheny County. We look forward to receiving your submissions in April!
